The Economic Corridor is China’s 21st century extension of the Silk Road. CPEC was conceived in the 1990s and first approached in 1999 from China to Pakistan to connect China’s western provinces to the Arabian Sea.
Gwadar port was built in mid-2000, and many MoUs were signed after 2010. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Pakistan on 20 April 2015, Pakistan and China agreed on a US$ 46 billion portfolio under CPEC. During the Chinese President’s visit to Pakistan, memorandums of understanding were signed on projects between China and Pakistan in various fields.
